Search your own trade plus “near me” from your phone. The frustrating part is that you probably have a profile; it's just not winning the spot. Here's how Google actually decides, and the usual reasons a good local business gets left out.
The three things Google is weighing
Every local result comes down to three factors. Understand these and everything else makes sense:
- Relevance — how well your profile matches what was searched. This is the part you control most: your primary category, the services you list, the words on your website.
- Distance — how close you are to the person searching. You can't move your shop, but this is why a business three towns over doesn't always outrank you, and why proximity cuts both ways.
- Prominence — how known and trusted you are: your volume and quality of reviews, mentions around the web, and general track record. This is the one that compounds slowly over months.
You can't do much about distance. Relevance and prominence are where a left-out business is almost always losing ground — and both are fixable.
The reason nobody suspects: verification
Here's the one that catches people. A profile can look completely fine to you in the dashboard while being invisible to searchers because verification never fully completed. Through 2026 Google has leaned hard on video verification for a lot of categories, and a listing stuck mid-process simply doesn't appear in the map pack. If your business vanished from results after an edit or a support flag, check your verification status first — before touching anything else.
Your categories and services are probably too thin

If you're a “contractor” but you actually do bathroom remodels, tile, and drywall, and none of that is spelled out, Google has little reason to show you for those searches. Pick the most accurate primary category, add the secondary ones that truly apply, and fill in your services in plain language. This alone can move visibility within weeks.

Google cross-checks your name, address, and phone number everywhere they appear — your site, your profile, old directory listings. When they disagree, even “Rd.” on one and “Road” on another, or an old phone number on a directory you forgot about, its confidence drops and so does your ranking. Getting your name, address, and phone identical across the web is unglamorous cleanup work that reliably pays off.
Prominence: reviews and time
Prominence is earned, not toggled. A steady flow of genuine reviews is the biggest lever a small business has here — which is why a consistent, no-pressure review habit matters so much. One warning for 2026: Google has tightened enforcement hard against keyword-stuffed business names and fake or incentivized reviews, with whole waves of listings suspended. What to actually do, in order
- Confirm the profile is fully verified. Fix this first if it isn't.
- Set the correct primary category; add real secondary categories and a complete services list.
- Make your name, address, and phone identical everywhere online.
- Keep a genuine, steady review habit going — and reply to them.
